M.L. Stedman’s debut novel The Light Between Oceans was critically acclaimed when it was released back in 2012 so its no surprise that the movie rights were snapped up shortly afterwards. This first trailer is really quite powerful and and manages to give us a glimpse into the story without revealing too much which is a perfect trailer in my eyes. The core cast is made up of three exceptionally consistent players: Michael Fassbender, Rachel Weisz and Alicia Vikander. And who knows if all goes well this Sunday the film could boast three Oscar Winners rather than just one.
The book and thus the film is set just after WWI, which means the world is trying to recover from the atrocities of war and therefore Fassbender’s character Tom having been a solider has a dramatic depth to him and perhaps its reasonable to suggest that because of the turmoil he has faced he is very much a moral man and will as hinted in the trailer do the right thing and return the child he and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) rescued to her truthful flesh and blood mother Hannah (Rachel Weisz).
The main way in which this film will succeed is based on the strength of the performances of the leads and Fassbender pretty much nails every role he has done, Alicia Vikander had a fantastic 2015 with great performances in Ex_Machina and The Danish Girl and well Rachel Weisz blew me away in The Constant Gardener and recently she was terrific in Youth as well. So no problem there, also having Director Derek Cianfrance the genius behind Blue Valentine at the helm of the picture pretty much means that The Light Between Oceans is going to be an amazing film, and I’m going to cry profusely, I just know it.
