Film was once the be all and end all for its dramatic and compelling story telling but now so many TV Shows have almost surpassed the quality of most films being made right now due to the fact that TV Shows have a lot more time to delve into a character’s psyche for much longer than any film can, thus some of the most interesting characters are now found on TV.
Here’s a list of my favourite TV Shows right now:
Game of Thrones
So this is a pretty obvious one, anyone who knows me knows that I adore this show. It’s probably the biggest TV show in the world right now and like millions of other fans I am counting down the days for its return (I’ve been counting down since the last episode of Season 5). 19 for those who didn’t know. The Jon Snow is he dead or alive debate is still as fresh as the moment he was stabbed by his fellow “Crows” last year. Personally, I think Melisandre’s going to work her magic and bring Snow back from the dead. Remember that interaction with Thoros of Myr, and Melisandre queried him on his ability resurrect Beric Dondarrion, Thoros said: “I have no power, I ask the lord for his favour and he responds as he will”. So my theory (and probably everyone else’s) is that Melisandre’s totally going to bring Snow back (Fingers crossed) because he is far too important to just die and she had a thing for him as well. Resurrect away Melissandre and you may just redeem yourself.
Seasons 1-5 Box Set’s from Amazon:
I am still devastated that NBC cancelled Hannibal as it was one of the most stunningly original TV Shows that I’ve ever watched. The cinematography was better than most films, with an utterly gorgeous colour palette and sophistication in direction, Hannibal may just be the best-looking show ever. And while it’s easy for aesthetics to get in the way of good content, Hannibal is also one of the most cerebrally stimulating show’s that I’ve watched. The subject material is so rich in intelligence and class it’s unreal. But perhaps the main selling point of the show is Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal Lector who is so charming and handsome but utterly twisted and diabolical. This is a show that everyone should watch, add it to your Bucket List people!
The Complete Collection 😭 (Bryan Fuller I beg you to change this, give us another season somehow!) on Blu-Ray from HMV
The Complete Collection from Amazon:
This Sci-Fi show is so addictive due to its fast pace and the intriguing mystery that flows from season to season. The backbone of the show, of course, is the brilliantly talented actress Tatiana Maslany who portrays over 10 different clones with distinct personalities and mannerisms. She nails every single second that she is on screen (Which is practically every second of the show). The real mind-blowing moments are when Maslany has to tackle clones impersonating other clones, which is superbly used for both comedic and dramatic effect.
Streaming wise you can check out Orphan Black on Netflix (Seasons 1 & 2) or Amazon Instant Video (Season 1 only)
For the record my favourite Clone is Cosima, she’s just so cool and sciencey.
Benedict Cumberbatch is just simply brilliant in the role of a modern day Sherlock Holmes, his quips are witty and his insults are legendary. The humour in the show is perfect. Ah, I could gush about this show all day! But I think literally everyone watches this show anyway, and if you don’t then give it a go!
Marco Polo – Netflix
This show is epic. Marco Polo follows (well you guessed it) Marco Polo’s adventures in the court of Kublai Khan, what is interesting is that this is mainly a show for westerners as the Mongolian and Chinese courts speak for the most part with crisp RP accents whereas Marco Polo speaks with a very heavy Italian Accent, this makes Polo feel more like an outsider which I thought was a clever way to present the title character. While Marco Polo is a great character and his navigation of the Mongolian court as an outsider is really intriguing but I would have to say that the best character has to be the absolutely fantastic Hundred Eyes the blind monk who’s Martial Arts Skills are insane and Taoist wisdom is awe inspiring. He is so awesome Netflix released a special episode dedicated to telling the origin story of Hundred Eyes and it was really great and inspiring to see how being blinded only strengthened his spirit rather than defeated it. Another thing I love about this show is its soundtrack, it mixes in traditional throat singing and really great cello riffs! So basically watch the show people, watch the show!
Mozart in The Jungle – Amazon Instant Video
This show is so good, most people probably dismiss it because they think that you need to love classical music to enjoy the show, truth is it helps but it’s not necessary because the show is ultimately about the characters who just so happen to work at an orchestra. The best part of the show is perhaps the eccentric Rodrigo, Gael García Bernal plays the maestro (conductor) with a fervent energy and it is just great to watch his escapades unfold. I really recommend this show as it is just a fun and clever half-hour comedy that I personally think is really underrated.
Marvel on Netflix (Daredevil & Jessica Jones)
A little of a cheat listing two shows as one, but they are leading to The Defenders series later on. Daredevil is awesome, season 2 was even better than season 1 which I didn’t think was possible, but I guess when you look at Batman Begins it’s a great film but The Dark Knight is superior in every way. Season 2 introduces Elektra, The Punisher and The Hand which are all iconic characters within the Daredevil and Marvel canon. I binge watched the whole series over the weekend of its release, that should be enough to tell you how good it was.
Jessica Jones surprised me, I didn’t really know what it was going to be about other than the fact that she was a badass private detective. The show turned out to be really compelling especially the weird relationship between Jessica and Kilgrave who was played exceptionally by David Tennant. And that Tennant portrayed the idea of Kilgrave being a desperate and petulant childlike man who is always used to getting his own way due to his power of persuasion was really creepy and interesting. Plus we got a bit of Luke Cage who’s show will be coming to Netflix at the end of September!
Sense8 – Netflix
So it took me an abnormally long time to check out this show, don’t ask me why because I really don’t know what took me so long. But after watching the first episode I was hooked and couldn’t stop watching, The Wachowskis are insane genius’ their concepts are so out there but they work! The show revolves around a group of characters who come from so many different walks of life, the main thing they have in common is that they are psychically linked and share the same birthday. The show revolves around this diverse group trying to navigate their everyday lives with the interruptions of psychic encounters which make for some of the funniest moments of the show, also to make matters worse they are also being hunted down. My favourite characters have to be Sun (Doona Bae is really awesome in this role) a badass Korean businesswoman by day and badass kickboxer by night and Wolfgang a Safe Cracker and career criminal from Berlin (His shoot out was awesome) who continually pops up in reluctant bride-to-be Kala’s life (these two need to get together!). Overall I would probably say this is the best new tv show that I have seen in a really long time and I really can’t wait for season 2!
House of Cards – Netflix
Frank Underwood may just be one of the most repugnant but fascinating characters on tv, Kevin Spacey plays him to perfection and his fourth wall breaking is a highlight of the show. Normally I avoid anything politics related for the fear of being utterly bored but Underwood’s ruthless climb to presidency is just so compelling to watch. Also, his determination to get what he wants (Except for the murdering part) is quite inspiring but I don’t think it’s socially acceptable to say that Frank Underwood is my spirit animal, is it?
Anyone who knows me knows that I love anything related to Gothic Literature thanks to studying it for my English Literature A Level so it was no surprise that I would love Penny Dreadful as the show literally takes all of those iconic characters from that genre and mashes them up into Victorian England. Eva Green plays one of the only original characters in the series Vanessa Ives, and she is such a compelling enigma and very much the force behind the intrigue of the show. Green plays her vulnerability and strength sublimely which is perhaps why Vanessa is one of my favourite tv characters ever.
Lena Dunham’s look into the lives of four twenty-somethings is in its penultimate season right now which is a little saddening as I literally have loved this show since it aired, but all good things come to an end and at least there is another season to go to tie up loose ends and give Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna a proper send off. I personally think this season has perhaps been the best yet as the four girls seem to slowly be growing up into semi-decent people, I also particularly enjoyed the episodes following Shoshanna in Japan as it let the viewers see a different side to her character, however, I was a little bit disappointed at how Shosh and Yoshi’s relationship took an abrupt turn, a more organic finish could have been formalised but I guess this is Girls after all and most of the characters actions are pretty rash. Moreover, one of the most surprising character developments this season has been with Jessa who is trying to become a therapist and she finally seems stable in her life without drugs and from the support of Adam. The season is only halfway through so it will be good to see where the rest of the episodes take the characters.
So there are my favourite TV shows currently, there are probably more that I could list but that would mean that this post would last forever. Let me know what shows you guys are watching and feel free to pop some recommendations down bellow.
