Everyone loves a good old favourites post and/or video (I sometimes spend all day watching my favourite Youtubers go on about their favourite beauty products, books, etc), mine however is a Obsessions of the Month post because lets face it Favourite is far too mild and mellow for me. Hmmmm Obsessions, Obsessions, Obsessions lets get going because this may be a long list:
I am currently reading two books (because why read one when you can read another and get confused about the two different plot lines and lose your place a few times – This has been something I have done literally all my reading life, as to the reason why I have no idea it makes reading quite hard!)
The Island of Dr Moreau
So I’m going to confess that this rather interesting classic only turned up onto my radar because of the awesomeness that is Orphan Black, so anyone who is just obsessed with the show will know that The Island of Dr Moreau is an integral part of the storyline. Cleverly Orphan Black uses the book as a plot device as it holds a scientists secrets to a top secret cloning project and while any old book could have been used the creators of the show deliberately chose this book as its storyline very much mirrors the theme of the show as both protagonists are navigating a dark and deadly road into finding out the truth about diabolical and unnatural meddling with nature.

Italo Calvino’s classic is a surreal dreamlike imagined conversation between famed global explorer Marco Polo (the Netflix series was one of my Obsessions when it first aired in 2014, bring on season 2) and the legendary Kublai Khan, in-between these conversations Polo describes cities that he has visited in such vivid details much like he actually did in the real travel diaries of the explorer. This book is a must read for any aspiring author as it shows you how such imaginative descriptions can be constructed in a really absorbing way, plus the totally different structure of the book also shows you just how inventive you can be when formulating your book too.

So while I was plagued with some unholy hybrid of flu/cold and what ever else it could possibly be earlier this month I spent a week in bed coughing and sneezing constantly and failing to get any semblance of sleep, so to get me through this horrendous ordeal I started watching some new shows. And we all know how quickly I form obsessions with TV Shows so without further ado here they are:
iZOMBIE – Netflix
iZOMBIE popped up onto Netflix so I thought I’d give it a go having heard some good things about it, and I quite easily found myself hooked on the smart and funny Zombie comedy that is quite a refreshing spin on the age old police procedural. One of the things I love about the show is the dynamic between Liv and her confidant and co-worker Ravi, the two of them together is just priceless, Ravi is a total nerd and the way he urges/bribes Liv into participating in Detective Babineaux’s investigations by eating the brains of the victims is often really funny.
Outlander – Amazon Prime
Another not new show that I am new to watching is Outlander, I must admit I did try watching it when I first subscribed to Amazon Prime (after binge watching season 2 of Mozart in the Jungle that is) and I found the pilot episode a little lacklustre to the point that I didn’t even finish it, so when this monster virus hit and I wasn’t in the mood to watch all my other shows I decided to give it another go and well I regret not watching it sooner. I have like many others have become rather enamoured with the rather dashing Highlander Jamie Fraser, also the stunning visuals are something to note (but having been to Scotland many times myself the landscape being so beautiful was no surprise) and Claire Beauchamp/Randall/Fraser (or whatever her name is) being such a strong badass women in a time where women were very much seen but not heard. Outlander has quickly become one of my Obsessions seeing as I literally stated the series a week into May and I’m already all caught up and waiting very impatiently like everyone else for a new episode each week.
Beauty & Skin Care
In May I made two purchases in this domain, one beauty and one skin care and these two items have become fast Obsessions that I’m sure will continue on for a long time.
This cult beauty product appealed to me on every level. It is a rose-tinted lip and cheek tint that you literally just swipe on and blend in. It smells gorgeous (anyone who knows me knows that I love Rose scents) and its so easy to use, a win-win scenario really for me as I’m quite lazy when it comes to make up, well its mainly because I’m always running late that I can’t invest any time into my makeup so with the Benefit Benetint I can apply it in under 30 seconds and look like I made a fair amount of effort doing so. Its a favourite of Hollywood Actress Nicole Kidman and Instagram Model Alexis Ren, good credentials right! Mwahahaha lazy girl beauty at its best!
So what are you waiting for head over to House of Fraser to grab yours!
Shiseido Cleansing Massage Brush
Cleansing is an essential step in anyones skin care routine, thats a given. However until this little purchase I haven’t really felt that my face has got the cleaning it needs. I was considering getting one of the Clarisonic face brushes but they are a little pricey for someone who is trying to save up for a car and a place to live! So instead I went with the Shiseido brush as well it was relatively inexpensive. The brush makes so much difference to my cleaning step as it makes my La Roche Posay cleanser foam up like its never done before. Also the tapered bristles (they are so damn soft!) matched with the little silicon pads give you a deep and massaging cleaning which feels rather luxurious

I am always praising the awesomeness that is Netflix and Amazon Prime and so my favourite Movie of May was actually a film I watched on Amazon, Beginners. The film was released in 2011 and I wanted to watch it back then but for some reason didn’t get around to it, fast forward 4 years to me browsing through the films on Amazon Prime. I enjoyed this film so much, it’s an indie romantic comedy/melodrama involving issues of sexuality, commitment and fear. The cast was sublime, the directing was beautiful and the little dog Arthur was just so sweet and endearing. A very recommended movie.
I love this quote as its a little reminder that no matter how amazing and great and powerful something may be it still has imperfections. The take away from this is to give yourself a break! You are a living breathing person, not something that has to be perfect for anyone else, this is your life, live it and forget about your imperfections and your mistakes because there is so much more out there to care about!
These three songs have been my little Obsessions for this month, I have listened to them most days on repeat and I’m still not sick of them so here they are:
Chvrches have released one good song after another from their latest album Every Open Eye. The Clearest Blue is synth-pop at its best. The beat is strong and the whirling synths build slowly and are complemented by singer Charlotte’s sugary vocals. This song feels like summer to me and throughout summer I shall be listening to it on repeat.
Basically, I discovered this song through the fact that I heard Tei Shi was doing a couple of shows with one of my favourite artists Grimes. So I looked up her latest song which happened to be Basically on Youtube and the rest is history. The song is quite low-key with retro synth bass lines and ethereal singing which is something that I really like at the moment, it’s a good song to chill out to and not to forget the Music video which is bizarrely awesome. Check it out!
BTS is one of the biggest bands in South Korea at the moment and it’s not hard to see why they are making waves overseas as their songs are awesome and catchy as hell. 불타오르네 (FIRE) was released this month and I haven’t stopped listening to it.
Thanks for checking out my Obsessions for the Month of May. What have you been loving this month, let me know bellow in the comments section. Also, what does everyone think of me starting a book club here on Charlotte & Cate so we can come together and discuss a brilliant book we’ve read together? Don’t forget to let me know your thoughts in the comments section. À bientôt mes amis
