Korean Boyband B.A.P are back with Wake Me Up which is my Song of the Week this week.
Most music seems to be about love or the dissolution of love. But recently in the Korean Music industry, there have been a few artists making songs about mental health issues (BTS’s Wings/You Never Walk Alone album is one of note with several songs broaching the subject) which is rather refreshing.
B.A.P’s comeback track Wake Me Up is about the struggles of life, of finding your true self and realising that we all change at some point in our lives. This is pretty heavy stuff for a “Pop” (is it Pop?) song, but it is handled so well and I find myself feeling uplifted after listening to it.
The music video itself is rather wonderful. It’s a dark and sombre theme with several different characters dealing with delusions, anxieties and depression. But the music video sends out a message of an “Emotion Revolution” (with love spelt backwards within the worth Revolution!) and the characters throughout the music video overcome and accept their faults and become healthier and happier as a result. A beautiful and inspiring video is ever there was one!
