G-Dragon’s latest solo outing comes in the form of his eponymous Mini Album Kwon Ji Yong wherein the title track 무제 shines as an understated but beautiful ballad.
For the most part, as part of BIGBANG G-Dragon is a rapper but in 무제, he lays his soul bare, but not as his stage persona he is singing as Kwon Ji Yong himself. For an artist that is renowned for his crazy music and wacky style, 무제’s understated feel is therefore rather shocking but in a good way. It’s an emotional and heartfelt track that only gets better with repeat listenings (same for the rest of the EP).
The music video is a perfect match for the song as it itself is also simple but beautiful. Essentially the video is of G-Dragon singing in a simple lace blouse in front of a backdrop that periodically changes colour. It’s simple and a little artsy but it allows your focus to be on G-Dragon and the beauty of the song.
The rest of the album feels a little more like the G-Dragon we are used to but the lyrics are still very personal. Originally Bullshit was the intended title song of the album but due to a scandal involving fellow BIGBANG bandmember TOP who is said to be now recovering from a near-fatal drug overdose (Thank goodness!) the title song was changed to 무제. YG Entertainment ceased promotions of the EP due to the scandal but despite that G-Dragon achieved and all-kill on the charts and has since made waves overseas with his first solo mini album since 2012! Also, interestingly the Kwon Ji Yong album was released on a USB rather than CD which again proves that G-Dragon is one of the most innovative artists working in the music industry at the moment. However, sadly, this may be the last release we get from G-Dragon before his military enlistment next year 😭
Listen to Kwon Ji Yong here:
Pentagon is a fairly new boyband in the K-Pop scene but this latest track is really cool and catchy. The vintage brass loop throughout is a rather nice touch and gives this track a difference to most of the synth-drenched electronic tunes that are everywhere at the moment. Also is it just me or does the video give off a little bit of Wes Anderson vibe?
