This week’s episodes of Bride of the Water God focused on the themes of guilt and blame, many of the characters (namely the gods) came to terms with the consequences of their actions in the past and how they are still being haunted by their past mistakes.
We learn that both Hoo Ye and Bi Ryum have a shared past and it’s a very dark moment they shared. Death and destruction have followed Hoo Ye throughout his life due to his powers and he has killed and maimed others accidentally as a result of not understanding the dark power within him. It’s revealed in episode 14 that when Hoo Ye was a young boy in one of his many life cycles, he accidentally killed Bi Ryum’s dearest friend Mo Myeong. This revelation makes so much more sense as Bi Ryum had a seemingly unjustified grudge against that demi-god until this point. Hoo Ye also confesses to So Ah that the blind girl he looks after lost her sight because of his powers, it’s a sad moment especially because you can tell that he most definitely hates himself for what he has done to others.
Also while Habaek’s return to the Human realm was such a cute moment I must admit that I felt really sorry for Hoo Ye who was watching from afar. He clearly is a kind-hearted man who just happens to have a dark, negative and dangerous power inside him, and it’s quite heartbreaking that we get to see this tender moment of disappointment as I am someone who is rooting for both Haebak and Hoo Ye to find happiness!!! Why are there so many conflicting feelings in this drama! I feel like Hoo Ye is a such a Frankenstein’s Monster like character that is at once sympathetic but also fearsome and it’s interesting how the drama has portrayed Hoo Ye’s complexity so far, and this has most definitely been a highlight of the show so I hope his story gets a great ending in the final 2 episodes!
Habaek is such a tease in episode 14! You don’t kiss a woman like that and stop and say that she has to wait for more and liken yourself to a candy binge😂!!! I love these weird moments where it becomes totally obvious that he doesn’t really know how to behave like a human and says the strangest of things. I must admit out of all the Korean drama’s I’ve watched it’s always the supernatural ones like Goblin, Legend of the Blue Sea, My Love From the Star etc that are my favourites and I think it’s because of the fact that the main characters are always quite weird and are clueless about the real world!
