The Bride of the Water God aired it’s final 2 episodes this week! I don’t think I’m ready for this story to end! Especially after all those mixed emotions from cute and funny moments one minute to the absolute tragedy the next!! 😭
It was obvious from the start that Habaek and So-ah’s days as a couple were numbered but being served with 7 days notice to return to the Divine realm or else (he will die if he stays) is so harsh and sad. This moment propels the storyline forward which I guess needed to happen as it felt like the narrative had no feasible end until Habaek sacrificed himself for So-ah. Personally, I feel like this moment is quite similar to the situation between Do Min-joon and Cheon Song-yi in My Love From the Star, he’s an alien that has to leave the planet otherwise he will die, it’s all very sad but he comes back to her in the end in the cutest moment ever!! And I guess while the outcome was pretty much the same it was the only way for the end to be satisfying and happy…because let’s face it that’s what you expect from these romantic dramas!! Goblin, The Legend of the Blue Sea, My Love from Another Star and now Bride of the Water God are all variations on the same theme of undying love and they are perfect heartwarming dramas that have to have these endings otherwise they wouldn’t give you that warm fuzzy feeling at the end.
The conclusion about So-ah’s father was much darker than I was expecting if I’m perfectly honest. It was quite a jarring moment in the finale episode as I was just expecting cute moments between Habaek and So-ah, the seemingly final farewell and then his return. Of course, the revelation that he died because he saved her from committing suicide was supposed to serve a dramatic purpose (and it most definitely did) it felt a little unnecessary and far too emotional to the point that I was more choked up about this revelation than Habaek’s sacrifice.
In conclusion, I feel like Bride of the Water God was an interesting drama and I enjoyed the journey So-ah, Habaek and the other gods went on. I just felt like Hoo Ye needed a better conclusion and that the ending was a little too jumbled. Something a little simpler would have sufficed I think or maybe that Habaek could take So-ah over to the divine realm or something like that so that she could become his Bride there. Actually, that would have been a pretty cool ending, but I quite like the recurring image of Habaek patiently waiting under the lamppost in his spot by So-ah’s house and that that was the most fitting way to reunite the couple. As for Hoo Ye, he should have either been welcomed back into the divine realm or be seen finding a lover of his own so that he’s no longer alone!
Let me know in the comments section what you thought of the finale episodes and the conclusion of the show!
