Blade Runner 2049 is my most anticipated film of the year, I love the original to the bottom of my heart so I hope this upcoming sequel is nothing less than brilliant as I’ll be so disappointed if it lets me down.
To tease us a little more before the film arrives in theatres in October three short stories will be released to fill in the 30-year gap between the events of the first film and Villeneuve’s sequel.
This first moody short 2036: Nexus Dawn introduces a new line of replicants and their creator Niander Wallace played by Jared Leto. As far as I can tell from this short and the trailers for 2049 Leto’s character will be the villain of the film. And as to how much of a villain he will be will remain to be seen, especially when you take into account that the original films main villain Roy Batty turned into a tragic figure towards the end. Wallace, however, seems to be a character that is quite arrogant, he is clearly a genius but he very much carries himself like a god, he speaks slowly and powerfully and he seems to be rather stoic and efficient and not guided by emotion at all.
The juxtaposition between Wallace and the board members (Benedict Wong etc) was rather well played as it gives Wallace the opportunity to be ruthless which gives us a taste of what sort of role he will be playing in the film. It also shows how powerful he is as a character and a CEO as by the time 2049 rolls around there are many Replicants which means that the ban on their creation was probably changed due to Wallaces new model that he unveiled in this short.
Let me know in the comments section what you thought of the 2036: Nexus Dawn short film and what your thoughts on Blade Runner 2049 are.
