I was first drawn to this Comic Book series because of the Artwork, it has a curious mixture of Art Deco and steampunk aesthetics mixed in with some absolutely gory elements that make it grotesquely gorgeous. Just my kind of thing really! But as I got into the story I fell in love with that part of the series too, Maika Halfwolf and all the other characters occupy a rather harsh world and it’s an intriguing world filled with odd mythology and talking cats with numerous tails.
It’s clear that Monstress is a feminist comic book due to the fact that most of the characters in this first volume are all Women, their characterisation is rich and they are also complex and fierce. This interview with Marjorie Liu in Vulture explores this abundance of females in the Comic and how mainstream media portrayals of Women such as those seen in Game of Thrones and Ex Machina has influenced Liu. Bizarrely for many readers, the strangest thing about this comic book has been the fact that most of the characters are female… so cats with multiple tails and weird grotesque monsters are totally normal? Just goes to show how most stories focus on a male protagonist or always have a larger ratio of men in them rather than women! Go Liu & Takeda for challenging this!!
Gorgeous artwork, complex female characters that are beautifully realised the only criticism I have is that I got a little lost sometimes with the story as everything moves so fast and It’s only until the end that it’s explicitly explained what all the different races in the world of the series are so while its a mystery while reading its also a bit confusing as you don’t really know the differences between the races until that point.
