Laura Mvula’s latest track Phenomenal Woman is a really cool tune, I heard it briefly a while back but it wasn’t until I was browsing through New Albums on iTunes that I found it again and I am so glad I did.
This song is catchy from the moment it begins with its whirring bass line and Mvula’s vocals that ooze soul and feminine power. Mvula was inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem also called Phenomenal Woman and she wrote the song as an anthem to inspire women to embrace there integral role in the world as heroines and nurturers and she urges us listeners to be ourselves and ignore the critics and the naysayers because “It don’t matter what people say cause they don’t know you, where you come from or where you’re going you are phenomenal woman”. These beautiful feminist lyrics only makes me love this song more as the catchy tune is backed up by a really important message to help us all become empowered women.
Also the music video for Phenomenal Woman is so cool and colourful, and Mvula looks totally badass strutting through the streets of Bo-Kaap (such a vivid place!) in Cape Town in her bright funky outfits (she kind of looks like a superhero). Mvula also proves that women don’t need to strip down and act seductive to create a awesome music video, all you need is something funky, creative and interesting not near nudity.
Ah I just love it, it’s short but sweet in length and it is feminist in theme and just fantastic. Listen to Phenomenal Woman and fall in love with the wonderful Laura Mvula.
